The University of Missouri and Missouri Department of Transportation established the Missouri Work Zone Safety Center of Excellence (MOWZES) to lead research and outreach on behavioral, educational, engineering, and technology solutions to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries in work zones.

About MOWZES

The primary vision of MOWZES is to conduct research to identify and implement solutions that transform work zone safety. The MOWZES activities are aligned with the Promoting Safety statutory research priority area of the US DOT and MoDOT’s Show-Me Zero initiative. MOWZES supports research that spans from exploratory to practice ready and that can be readily implemented on various projects such as MoDOT’s Improve I-70. Researchers identify the level of readiness for implementation of technologies, tools, and guidelines developed in MOWZES projects to help stakeholders understand the maturity of the developed products. We lead efforts in four cross-cutting multimodal themes of Emerging Technologies, Data and Tools, Worker Safety, and Vulnerable Road Users.

About

MOWZES’ Research Themes

MOWZES’ research projects address the safety of multiple modes, including passenger vehicles, commercial motor vehicles (i.e., large trucks, buses), and vulnerable road users (pedestrians, people with disabilities, bicyclists).

Themes

Work Zone Innovation Ecosystem

The MOWZES Advisory Board was established to drive a work zone innovation ecosystem consisting of public, private, and academic sectors to help spur the development of transformative research ideas. The MOWZES team actively engages with constituents from all three sectors of the ecosystem on research, technology transfer, and outreach initiatives. Exploratory research that translates methods and tools from other disciplines to work zone safety applications will be conducted.
